Our firm is proud of the fact that our team of five professionals has an average of over 32 years each of professional tax and accounting experience serving clients. 

Stevenson G. Smith, CPAStevenson G. Smith, CPA

Steve is the owner of Stevenson Smith, Certified Public Accountants, LLC. Prior to forming our firm, he was a partner with Grant Thornton, LLP were he held a variety of leadership positions, including serving as the West Cluster Tax Partner wherein he was responsible for the Grant Thornton tax consulting services in the western United States. 

Steve began his career in 1977 with Arthur Andersen & Co. in Los Angeles. In 1983, he founded Smith, Livingston & Company and served as its managing partner until 1990 when that firm merged with Grant Thornton.

As a Certified Public Accountant, Steve has 35 years of experience in public accounting. He graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. He is a member of the Utah Association of Certified Public Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He currently serves on the board of the Heritage Schools, Inc. and has previously served on the boards of the Utah Association of CPA’s, the Mental Health Association of Utah, and the Provo Rotary Club.

Frank H. Gardner, CPAFrank H. Gardner, CPA

Frank is a partner emeritus at Stevenson Smith, Certified Public Accountants, LLC.  Frank works at the firm on a contract basis.   Prior to this position, Frank was a partner at Grant Thornton, LLP and its predecessor firms.  Frank held several leadership positions while at Grant Thornton, including that of managing partner of the Provo, Utah office for several years. 

Frank has a broad range of experience and expertise with individuals and businesses. Two of his areas of specialization are with clients in the financial institution and automotive retailing industries.

He served as President of the Central Utah Chapter and Vice President of the UACPA and was a member of the Committee on Federal Taxation and Regional Chairman of the Trial Board of the Ethics Committee of the AICPA.

Frank began his career as a CPA in 1951 and has over 58 years of experience in public accounting. He is a graduate of Brigham Young University and of the Harvard Business School. Frank is a member of the Utah Association of Certified Public Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Roxanne Wells, CPARoxane Wells, CPA

Roxane Wells is a senior manager at Stevenson Smith, Certified Public Accountants, LLC.   Prior to joining that firm, she was a tax manager at Grant Thornton, LLP.

Roxane began her career in private industry. While in private industry, she gained expertise in all areas of accounting. In 1990, Roxane joined the firm of Smith, Livingston & Company and began to specialize in taxation. She has serviced clients in manufacturing and distribution, multi-level marketing, construction, agriculture, and retail, including many publicly traded companies.

One of Roxane’s areas of specialization has been in the preparation and review of tax accrual computations as required by FAS 109 for both public and private companies. She has also worked extensively with companies with issues in international taxation.

Roxane has over 25 years of experience in public and private accounting. She graduated from the University of Utah with Bachelor of Science degrees in Accounting and Finance. She is a member of the Utah Association of Certified Public Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Kathleen Sanders, CPAKathleen Sanders, CPA

Kathleen Sanders is a senior manager at Stevenson Smith, Certified Public Accountants, LLC.   She worked for ten years for Grant Thornton LLP in the Utah offices.

Kathy has extensive experience in tax compliance and consulting. She specializes in serving clients in the community financial institution industry and has helped 20 community banks with their SFAS 109 calculations. She has had specialized training in bank tax compliance through the Bank Tax Institute conference held annually.

Kathy has practiced in California, Texas and Utah. Most recently she has practiced in Utah for the past twelve years.

She is a graduate of Brigham Young University. Kathy is a member of the Utah Association of Certified Public Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Jan BowlsJan Bowls

Jan Bowls has been a manager at Stevenson Smith Certified Public Accountants, LLC for over six years.  Prior to joining the firm she was an accountant with Grant Thornton, LLP and their predecessor firms for 25 years.

Jan graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting, and began her career working with Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. (now KPMG) in Salt Lake City and Honolulu, Hawaii. In addition to the international CPA firms she has worked for, she has experience with a local CPA firm in Kennewick, Washington and one in Salt Lake City, Utah. Her sole private industry employer was United Nuclear Industries in Richland, Washington as the tax and insurance specialist.

She has specialized in taxation, accounting and payroll services and preparation of compilation statements for small businesses She has worked extensively with the agriculture industries, real estate industries, professional corporations and employee retirement plans, and in the preparation of individual, partnership and S corporation tax returns.
